Profile of Caroline Simmill
Caroline Simmill is a full time professional artist specialising in painting coastal scenes and the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Following the completion of art courses at Reigate School of Art in Surrey, England, she later achieved further qualifications in Creative and Commercial Art. She also taught art in Totnes Devon.
Drawing inspiration from the country’s dramatic and ever changing climatic conditions to the allure and majesty of its mountains. Dark Stormy skies, a play of light on the sea are all an endless fascination and inspiration to the artist. 2005 has seen Caroline create a new collection of oil paintings. These have been developed through travels along the coastline from Gardenstown, Banffshire right up to the West Coast.

Staying in self catering studios and B&B along the way gave her the freedom to work directly from her subject exploring the shoreline as dusk fell and a new day dawned in early spring and late Autumn when the seas project the most drama. Walking and sketching on the remote wild coastal areas of Wester Ross where icy cold winds blast across exposed shorelines were very challenging. The whole experience of being in a very isolated location made the drama of the subject all the more powerful and exciting to work from.
Visual memory and drawing in charcoal directly from her subject are all part of the creative process. The oil painting is later developed in the peaceful and rural location of her studio in Moray. Her paintings are highly collectible and are in collections, not only in this country, but throughout many parts of the world. She exhibits her work in galleries throughout the north of Scotland. Caroline has lived in the Highlands since 1984 and currently resides and works from her home in Lhanbryde Moray.
